Robbery suspect killed in shootout with police

Durban- A shootuot between police and three suspects who allergedly robbed a women at gunpoint resulted in the death of one suspect in Clermont, Durban, on Friday, police said on Monday.

 The three suspects, one of whom is a police officer, allergedly forced a 28-year-old women into their car after they spotted her walking alone on a road in New Germany, eThekwini.

 "They robbed the women of her cellphone and she managed to open the door and got out of the vehicle'" said spokesperson Captain Nqobile Gwala.

 "The suspects then fled the crime scene in their getaway vehicle."

 A police officer  witnessed the incident and persued the suspects to the Clermont area.

 "The suspects fired shots at the police officer who also retaliated, fatally wounding one suspect," said Gwala.

 Warning to 'criminals hiding behind SAPS badges'

"With the help of the K9 unit another suspect, who is a police officer stationed at KwaMashu, was arrested while the third suspect managed to flee the scene."

KwaZulu-Natal acting police commissioner Major General Bheki Langa praised the police officer for his quick response to the robbery.

"This arrest will serve as warning to other criminals who are hiding behind our SAPS badge.

"The vast majority of our police officers are principled and will not hesitate to arrest any person who commits crime. Nobody is untouchable."

We can't allow politicians 'to use and abuse the force ' - Cele to new police recruits.

Pretoria - Minister of Police Bheki Cele has ordered policing units to refuse be used as political tool when responding to protests, marches and events. Cele was attending the launch of the public order policing reserve units in Pretoria, along with National Police Commissioner General Khehla Sitole. "You don't ask political affiliations of the people you will be working with, you deal with them as South Africans," said Cele. "Don't be employed by the politicians to do their work. Water restrictions may be reviewed at a later stage - Neilson

Cape Town - Cape Town will not have Day Zero this year, but only if residents continue to save water, DA leader Mmusi Maimane announced on Wednesday. Maimane gave an update on the water crisis at a press briefing at the DA federal head office on Monday. "Every week, water consumption has steadily declined and if we continue at this rate and receive rainfall, we can ensure that Day Zero will not occur," Maimane said.
